Q: So my friend just came from like a 1 month vacation from canada where his sister migrated and now lives there. We live in the Philippines and my friend had all these stories about canada. So i just wanna confrm from real canadians...are these true? Forgive me if I sound like an ignorant monkey or something.

1. In canada, milk and a loaf of bread is delivered every morning for free in every household.
2. In canada, internet speed for 8 bucks is 50mbps. (probably true...we have shitty internet here...top speed of 2mbps at 20USD)

3. There is like...an open yard for every household where they can leave their used items like appliances or electronics and some other people can just come and pick it up (my friend said his sis picked up an old laptop at one of these)

4. canadian tax is like 40% of the income?

5. Canadian people are real polite. (My friend accidentally bumped into someone real hard and the guy just told him to be more careful and to have a nice day...here people would have cussed at you)

6. Every household is recommended to have a sports car like a Porche with Nitro because at night the streets are open to drag racers and it is recommended that you drive a fast car at these roads so as not to get into accidents and keep up with them.

7. Salary is so high, normal people afford Luxury cars like a Porche. And they normally have 2 cars per house hold.

A: 1. No. Milk delivery disappears decades ago. Unless you make arrangements (and pay) to have groceries delivered (disabled, elderly, etc.) then you go to a supermarket and buy these along with the rest of your food. Even when delivered, food isn't free.

2. No. Typical high speed internet runs around $30 to $70 a month depending upon location, provider, and speed. Most cable and phone companies offer packages which include some combination of phone, television, and internet service.

A: I would say, in general, Japanese cars are still pretty good. Personally, I think that Honda in particular isn't paying too much attention to detail fit and finish and I have had many non-mechanical problems with my 2008 Accord.

Toyota's recalls were basically just blown out of proportion, and they are still great cars. Nissan is a great car company as well. Hyundai/Kia (same company) had a very strong history for reliability since about the 2006 model year, and they are a very solid choice. I think ford has been doing great until their current generation Ford Fusion, which seems to be plagued with bad trannys. GM is decent... Personally,though, I wouldn't buy any GM cars. Chrysler, from what I heard, still has some work to do, but they have improved in the last couple years.

Ultimately, now, there are just so many choices, but personally, I would buy a Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Toyota, or a Ford

Noob to restoring a car?

Q: Recently me and my wife decided to wait on kids and while we are waiting we decided to learn different skills. The skill i allllways wanted to learn was to learn to fix cars. I know nothing about cars what so ever but i have self taught myself to cut my own hair, build and repair computers (work for geek squad now) and cook. I realized the best way to learn is HANDS ON! Is it a good idea to buy an old car and tear it down to restore it and learn that way?

I basically just need some guidance on what i should do to learn about fixing cars. I have about 8k to spend and im thinking about getting like a 2001 crown vic and making repairs on it and stuff but i also heard to not mess with fords. Is their a forum that can assist me more? im excited and i cant wait to get started i just need a few tips

A: Good day to you, as a self-taught man myself I can tell you that the only wrong car to start with is a total basket case, complicated (read, newer than 2000) luxury car, small newer FWD cars, or cars in need of a new engine. I taught myself how to repair cars on my 1994 BMW 530I, not knowing any different I'd say it was a wonderful car to start with, but the parts are too expensive.

Why no basketcase or complete teardown? That's not a good place to start because it will take a very long time to know if the work you've done is any good. You may wind up chasing your tail if you, out of ignorance, don't do a good job on any one thing. Imagine getting everything buttoned up only to find out that you caused an engine oil leak in a very difficult area - then you have to tear the whole thing down all over again - that sucks! You're also more likely to give up or let the project sit for long periods of time. Nearly instant gratification and a car you can continue to drive about is the way to go.

My recommendation for a first time tinkerer is to start with a cheap car that needs TLC. An old crown vic is a great place to start, as these simple beasts leave you ample room to work on. No need to worry about it being a ford, the parts all come cheap and your labor is a labor of love - so no losses there.

First thing you'll do is change all your fluids and do a tuneup, tires, etc. That's a great lesson right there. You may find yourself quickly modifying for more power (intake, exhaust, performance engine management, etc) or tinkering with the electronics to make the car uniquely yours. Next you may want to attend to rust on the body, creeping into the doors etc (which means you need to borrow a welder!) which is an awesome experience. You may also end up playing with some paint and dealing with interior problems in the HVAC system, window motors and controllers, etc.

Here is a short list of cars I would recommend you start with, years 1990 to 2000: Ford Mustang, Ford Crown Victoria, Chevy Camaro, Chevy Corvette, Chevy Impala (RWD), Chevy 1500 truck, Ford F-150, Ford Ranger, Nissan Pickup, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan 240SX, BMW 318, BMW 325. What do all these cars have in common? They are all RWD, leave enough room for you to tinker, and have great online support communities. Except for the Bimmers, the parts cost is reasonable - too.

A: BM-14 isn't small. The normal carrier would be at minimum a 4x2 2-tonne truck like the GAZ-63 or preferably a 2.5 tonne ZiL -157 or 4.5 tonne 6x6 truck like the ZiS-151.

Now the Chinese 107mm Type 63? Sure, no problem. Those can be found in the back of Toyota Hilux all over the third world.

A: Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Mazda Protege, etc... Any reliable 4 cyl car will do well enough as a first car. Getting a nice car in your budget will greatly depend on how well or how not so well the car was maintained. Look at web sites like Auto Trader & eBay just to get a feel of what cars are out there. Never get suckered into buying a car over the internet unless you physically look at the car yourself. If you cannot get out to a car in a reasonable amount of time, then take a pass on it. Lots of scams out there too. If in doubt, take a pass on it. You can always ask about it here. Lots of knowledgeable folks here. Cheers!

1997 Toyota Celica GT convertible - rare limited edition?

Q: A friend of mine has a black 1997 Toyota Celica GT convertible, its a limited edition car and everything I've found about them online are all 4 cylinders. Well my friends is a 6 cylinder and I'm wondering if Toyota ever came out with this model or if the 6 cylinder engine is after market. I know that the engine of this car was replaced once and the garage that did it told my friend it was a 6 cylinder and that they would have to special order it and blah blah.

TL;DR - Did Toyota come out with a 6 cylinder version of the '97 GT convertible? If so, how rare/valuable is this car, that is, if it is rare or valuable?
From what I've been told, it's a 6. When the engine was replaced they had to order the 6 cylinder engine and my friend is still paying for it all. My thinking is that either the first owner bought the 6 or the garage duped my friend into putting a 6 cylinder engine in it because they could.
And if that's the case is there a way to prove that the garage lied or anything like that? probably not since the old engine is gone and it was about 2 years ago... but worth the ask.

A: I can't find a reference that lists a six as an option any place in the world. One would suspect that if such a car was made it would appear at least in the models sold in Japan. But it doesn't!
So if (which I doubt) it is factory it is rare. But keep in mind dealerships some times build ringers for demo purposes and a dealership might have made the swap for the "Demo unit". But at this point it is hard to tell.
Take a look at the VIN, if it was built with a six then the fifth digit in the VIN will not be a B (1.8 engine) or a G (2.2 engine).

A: I would say go for the Toyota Corolla. My mom bought a nissan xterra in 03 and it has about 190,000 miles and is overheating/burning and the air compressor broke as well. However in the toyota tercel we had before, we had about 350,000 miles on it before it broke down for good.

I honestly think as long as you do good maintenance, either of the cars you purchase will last a good while.

Q: I'm a junior in high school and It has always been my dream to become a soldier and fight for my country but i also want to become a mechanical engineer, i don't know which to do? A: NROTC or US Naval Academy - either option will allow you to complete your Engineering degree as well as become a commissioned Marine Officer upon graduation. After your service obligation, you can stick to the military or head for Toyota with a solid head start in leadership and management.

A: Toyota all the way. I like all cars equally, regardless of if they are domestics or imports. The thing about Toyota, is that there cars are built extremely well. People don't realize this, mainly because they associate all asian countries together, but Japanese built cars are extremely good. The Japanese take alot of pride when they build there cars, its just in their nature. However, we cannot say the same for the Chines built cars. For example, the Honda Fit. In the United States, the Honda Fits are made in Japan. However, in Canada, they get their fits from China. The Honda Fits in the U.S. are much more reliable than the ones in Canada, only because the difference in cultures that make the cars. Personally I think you are the only one that are going to be able to make this decision. If I were you, I'd think about what I'm going to be using it for. If you are going to be doing any offroading or using it for work, I'd go with the American made one, just because they seem much more rugid. However, if you are going for just a daily driver, I'd go for the import. Although they seem less rugid, they are more reliable.

A: Mazda as a brand rates 6th in a UK reliability survey (Kia is #5, Mitsubishi #7).
The Mazda 3 rates better than average, Mazda 6 (a sedan) rates slightly lower, still above-avg.
Mazda is a very good brand, even if in this survey Hondais #1, Suzuki #2, Toyota #3 and Kia #5. Others rank lower: #8 Subaru, #10 Daewoo (aka Chevrolet in some markets) #11 Hyundai, #13 Lexus, #16 Nissan.
Don't get fixed on this, though. even a lower-ranking model or brand will eventually turn out to be a decent product - this depends mostly on the regular care and maintenance it has received throughout its service life, ie on its owner(s).

Q: The question is self explanatory. Please break these down for me as best you can. I have come across these terms in my search for a used car and all of this automotive jargon that I've been hearing is like a different language to me.

- a car that is described as "v6 3.4L ram air induction"

-"aftermarket fiberglass functional ram air induction hood"

- borla exhaust (I know what an exhaust is but my main question regarding this is: are these exhausts noisy and rumbly? I hear that they're great exhausts, but I'm concerned about the noise factor)

A: "v6 3.4L ram air induction"

- V6 3.4L: it has 6 cylinders (V simply means 3 cylinders on one side, 3 on the other. Some engines are i6 (i stands for inline). All 6 cylinders are in one line). 3.4liters is the size of each cylinder. To give you an idea of how big 3.4 is... most Honda / Toyota economy cars range from 1.6 - 2.2 liter engines. Bigger motors found in lets say a mustang v8 can get to 5.0liters.

- Ram Air induction: It's just a name of a company who designs aftermarket Intake systems. An intake is simply a Tube with a filter that the engine uses to suck in air... nothing really that complicated of an upgrade.

"aftermarket fiberglass functional ram air induction hood" This is a little hood scope, it is basically a modification the owner made that allows the RAM AIR intake to suck in air
- to make things simpler, a hole the guy cut to allow the tube to suck in air, which he made out of fiberglass.

Borla exhaust: This is subjective as far as how it sounds... if we're talking normal people who have zero interest in cars, it's loud. People who are car enthusiast will say that the borla exhuast sounds nice.
- my opinion, Borla is a good name brand

I am assuming you are looking to buy this car. The upgrades the guy did on this car is very basic and did not change that much that may affect the engines life.

In reality, you listed your priorties (mpg, maintenance, insurance), and the best you can get for all of these is going to be a motorcylce. If you get a motorcylce, start real small, at like a 250cc. Now it wont be very fast, but it will be EXTREMLY good on gas, the maintenance will be EASY and CHEAP, and insurance is EXTREMELY CHEAP as well because its only a 250cc.

A: When you're dealing with vehicles in this low price range what you should be looking for is not necessarily a certain make and model but rather the vehicle which has been maintained properly and on schedule for most, if not all, of its life.

Sure, some models such as an older Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla do have great reputations, if the vehicle you're looking at has very high mileage and a spotty or non-existent service history, it can still be a very risky buy.

Since you mentioned a Supra specifically, you won't find one that is in good shape for less than $3 grand. A Supra for that price will be beat up and abused (and requiring extensive repairs in the near future).

what your looking for is a *full* kit. one with shocks. those will be purdy much "plug and play" save the wheel/tire upgrade and alignment when done.

with a 4" lift you can get 32-33R under there. look at the details of all kits.
my only suggestion is that if you do off roading routinely, get a kit with lift shackles for the rear. not lift blocks. lift block lend a greater leverage ability for axle wrap. over time, the will impact the ring/pinion. end up with ring gear slap. eventually that will need attention.

FYI,
there is possibly a way to have the alignment done for free. we have a recall on the relay rods on this. if yours isn't done, you could do the lift (does not void the recall) upgrade to 32-33's, go in for the recall. they will replace the rods. as a by-product, it will need an alignment. and toy will do it. wash and vacuum too.

owner 93 toy pu 4" lift, 88 toy pu 8" home fab lift. and installed many kits. toy's chevy's. ferd's, and mopar. strangely, no other imports though.

A: You know, this is an excellent question and one that needs to be understood by all drivers as this can be a huge safety factor. The people that experience uncontrolled acceleration, such as those owners of Toyota model cars in the last few years, did not know and failed to take proper action. Drivers with those flip-flop footwear have experienced the shoe to trap the accelerator in the down position giving unwanted acceleration. Loose floor mats have also been guilty of this as well. So, what is N or neutral? In manual cars, rare these days, the neutral means the engine is not engaged to the drive train or the axle that moves the tires of the car. The clutch pedal is pushed down to free a pressure plate so the transmission then can be selected to the correct gear for the occasion. Well, in an automatic transmission the effect is the same and the engine is disconnected from the wheels. For most drivers this is an unknown gear selection and not much attention is given. So, no need to be concerned as to how this happens, all you need to know is that the motor will not drive the wheels. In neutral, much like in park, you can rev up the motor and listen to the sound and watch the revolutions go up without much happening in terms of motion. Oh, in park the same happens as in neutral as far as disconnecting the engine from the wheels except that additionally the car is in a safe park mode and will not roll with any input as if the parking brake is engaged. But, for all specific information as to the operation and maintenance and servicing of your car you need to read the owner's manual and become familiar with its contents. OK? Best of luck.

A: Anywhere in Silver Lake and Los feliz is probably where you'll find the most hipsters in the Los Angeles area (LA is kind of anti-hipster if you haven't noticed by now.) Look for the large number of vegan restaurants clustered near each other, or any place that would have Farmer's Market. Also, if you see lots of Toyota Priuses, Subaru's, and Volkswagen Jetta's, you've made it in the hipster zone.

If you want hills or trees, go live in Oregon or Washington. You won't find that in SoCal. Also hipster central is basically up in Oregon or Washington as many "hipster" artists originate from the Portland or Seattle area.

If you want to find the hipsters, they'll be at practically any Starbucks (except for the ones inside stores like: Albertsons, Target, etc.)

A: I have a hybrid vehicle and I do not worry about what is the voltage. Hybrids come in different versions and usages so it is not essential to know about the electrical power that moves the electrical motors. Suffice to know that they work. OK? Now, this subject of hybrids can be technical and complicate but there are enough websites that explain the technology. Just Google it. I have a 2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid. It came in two versions. Ours has the nice display that you can select that informs the status of the system. The cheaper version did not come with this and had a bit of information on the instrument panel. You know you are on electric because the motor shuts off as if the key had been removed. Total silence. The 2011 Fusion hybrid is closer to the Toyota Prius in that the car can run on electric up to 40 mph but with limited range. The whole concept originated with the stop/start feature to save gas when in traffic. With newer battery technology and software that manages the energy much better the 2012 models can do much better. The plug-in hybrids are even better as they run faster and longer on electrical power. But you do need a way to plug them at home and even at work. But if there is not , no worries, as the motor runs when the battery is down to 30% power. But do Google the subject and get informed. With proper driving techniques you can get better mpg performance that driving the car like a regular one. It is worth getting involved. Best of luck.

A: What you can do is get inside the website on Craigslist. www.craigslist.org Use the search tools, pinpoint your area & surrounding areas. Put in key words like “admin, office, law, police dept. & criminal justice." If you're lucky, you will find a job that will be in line with what you're going to school for, like the nearest court house, police, sheriff station or law office. Even if the local police dept. doesn’t have any openings, apply anyway. You want that phone call when they have an opening. This could transition you to FT once you’ve graduated & the best help for homework.

Look in your local newspaper weekend job classifieds. See if you get a mailer with jobs posted. You may avoid Monster, you get SWARMS of people contacting you from agencies that want to find a job for you, but take a chunk of what your pay would be for their fees. If you get a job on your own without a temp. svc., your pay is likely to be as high as possible for the skills you now have that NO one gets to take a cut from. As your skills & knowledge improve, your worth will also rise.

Locate the website for your local bus system to see the routes, times & costs for a year pass compared to per-ride cost. Once I found a job, there were a few people at work who lived near me & offered to pick me up & take me home. This was nice & if your job is pretty close to home, it’s likely this may be offered to you as well.

Strengthen & build up your credit score. If you don't have a credit card, once you're employed, apply for them. In most cases the guidelines are: NEW CAR: 5 years or more & USED CAR: 2 years.

When you are finally ready to buy a car, one of the points the salesman is likely to make is comparing a used car at say 5K, for the loan to a new car at say 15K, they will likely put side-by-side a payment that is almost exactly the same for buying new VS used, trying to encourage you to buy new.
In this bad economy, try to choose the option that will allow you to own the car free & clear SOONEST. Depending on family’s financial position, discuss this with them as well, sometimes a parent will make a deal with you to match whatever you save up. Ask your parents if you hold down a job, if they would either buy a car & let you make payments to them OR co-sign for you to buy your own car in your own name. Building good credit will be important when the day comes that you buy a place of your own. Also, credit checks are run for many other things like renting a room, apt. or for a job you apply for. The freedoms attached to a good credit score will be important to you in the coming years to get the lowest interest rates available & have more choices for many areas.

Go door to door in your neighborhood, share that you wish to make some extra money while you get through school & what odd jobs they may have. Once they see you are a neighbor & feel that respect for what you're trying to accomplish, they may enjoy hiring you to do some of the things they don't like doing. A: The difference in diameter will cause the differential planetary gears to spin all the time, which they are not designed to do. It wont matter if you match sizes soon, but if you leave it that way for like, YEARS, those gears could fail.

I would take a tire off the front and put it on the rear so they match.

A: The Mazda Miata is one of the most reliable cars you can buy. They easily last 300,000 miles with proper maintenance just like Honda Civic's and Toyota Corolla's. It also has a great resale value. A clean 97 Miata with 60,000 miles is worth $4000-$5000.

It is fun to drive, lightweight, and lots of fun. But it is not for everyone. It is Rear Wheel Drive so it is slippery in rain if you accelerate or turn quickly and it is impossible to drive in snow.

It is only a 2 seater and it has a small rear trunk. It is not very practical. That is why it is not for everyone.

But it is an amazing reliable, cheap to maintain sports car.

A: If this is really what you want to do be ready to work a lot more than 8 hours a day. Also know that you don't get steady pay since you're 100% on commission. It's a hard life honestly and I would suggest you go to college and get a professional degree. Get your MBA or something.

Yes, you can make great money. But you have to be great at what you do and work long hours 7 days a week. But 100k a year is very doable.

All you need is a D.L and clean urine for your drug test. And a lot of motivation to make money. Some states like California also require you to get an automobile sales person license which costs about $200.

Start at a kia or Hyundai dealer because it's easier getting a job there and when you have more experience go to Honda or toyota, then Mercedes or BMW, that's the major leagues but almost impossible to get hired without 5 plus years Of experience.

A: The truth - nobody knows yet what the typical life of a Toyota Hybrid battery is.
So few have failed in the 10 years they've been available, so the typical life of the battery is more than the current age of the oldest battery. Ask again in 20 years time and we might know, although the chances are that the cars will wear out before the batteries.

A Toyota dealer should be able to give you the price of a replacement battery pack.

A: I bought a 2000 Boxster Base 2.7L just over a year ago as my first car at 21. I got it for $9700 with 76,900 miles on it. 5 speed manual. Completely Stock with 17 inch Turbo Twist Style Wheels.

So far, the Boxster has been very reliable for me. I bought it with a bad starter, which is still bad, but still works. $500 fix if you do it yourself. I also bought it with a bad inner tie rod, which cost $30 and 15 minutes to replace. I love the car. I love its handling, speed, engine sound. It puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. It feels faster than it is. I now have 85,000 miles.

The Boxster is actually a very simple car to work on. There are 3 access points to the end. Directly Behind the seats, on top of the engine, and under the car. Even Serpentine belts just take 5 minutes to install. Performance parts like Exhaust Systems, Suspension pieces, and rims are VERY expensive from aftermarket, you can find cheap intake and under drive pulley and a few other go fast parts.

I have driven it in snow and rain. In rain, it tends to hydroplane past 50mph so you definitely want to drive slow. In 1 inch snow or less, it is actually pretty good for a RWD car assuming you drive less than 20mph. But it was not good at braking in snow.

Reliability:
Like I said, so far it has been fine for me and I checked the common problems over the summer and it seemed healthy.
Another acquaintance of mine has a 98 Boxster with 223,000 miles. His first major repair was at 206,000 miles. Other than that, he gave it regular maintenance. He made a forum showing his road trip in his Boxster from Cali to Texas to Michigan, and back the same way. The 2000+ model is more reliable than the pre-2000 models.
But not all Boxster are reliable, there is a 30% chance you can have one of the affected cars.

Porsche's weak point is the IMS (Intermediate Shaft Bearing). Due to incorrect manufacturing tolerances on some of the IMS bearings produced, it can go bad in your car. This can happen at any mileage or age. Once it goes bad, you need a new $15,000(w/labor) engine. Warning signs for this is to check the oil filter when changing the oil. If the oil filter has metal shards, your IMS is going bad. Stop and tow it to the shop to get the IMS replaced.

If you can catch it before it happens, you can save your engine and turn a $15,000 repair into a $2500 repair. Yes, Changing the IMS is expensive.

Luckily, my car's IMS seems like it was not one of the bad ones. No signs of metal shards in my oil filter.

Another common problem is RMS. (Rear Main Seal). With age, it wears out and then you will have an oil leak. RMS is a cheap fix. It is just a sealant.

Another Common Problem is the Water Pump. Porsche poorly designed their water pump. The Boxster and 996 911 was their first experience making water cooled engines. The water pumps last every 60,000 miles-100,000 miles on average, but some people have had to replace them within 40,000 miles. Always buy OEM. Not aftermarket.

Last common problem has to do with Age. Being that this is a 12 year old car. It could have an idle problem. This could be from a vacuum leak, dirty MAF sensor, dirty Idle Control Valve, or Dirty Throttle Body.

I had a rough idle. When I cleaned the throttle body, the problem was fixed. It was just a 15 minute job since it is so easy to work on these cars.

Maintenance Costs:
The Boxster takes 9.2 quarts of oil and Porsche recommends that it is changed every 10,000 miles. They recommend Mobile One Synthetic 0w-40.

Here is the truth. Change it every 5,000 miles. If you drive rough and hard, change it every 3,000 miles. You can change it every 10,000 miles, if you plan to drive it like a Toyota Prius. Since you are looking at a Porsche, chances are you want to drive fast.

You can use 5w-40 oil as well. It depends on the weather. I used Castrol Synthetic Oil.

Oil changes at normal mechanics cost $80-125 depending on the cost of their oil.
At the Porsche dealership, it costs $185 for an oil change. Or you can do it yourself for $40-50. 15 minute job.

Tires cost $500-600 total.

Alignment at the dealer costs $145. At a regular mechanic, it costs $80-120. These are the quotes I got in the past.

Dealership hourly labor rate is $133 per hour. Regular Mechanics cost $70-100 per hour in labor.

So maintenance and repairs are high. But I do all of the work myself so I pay $0 for labor. I just pay for the oil and parts. Don't be afraid to get in there are try to fix it yourself. It is VERY easy.

It takes Premium gas ONLY. The ECU is set up to accept 91 octane at a minimum, but recommended octane is 93. I always try to put 92 or 93 octane. If you put less than 91 octane, the engine will seize, or possibly blow from engine knock.

A: To me most combo packs come with an amp that isn't worth taking a p*ss on. Just go to all of your local shops and play anything and everything in your price range. Forget about name brands or what anyone else likes. The thing is, quality control isn't great on guitars in that price range. What this means to you is your best friend may have an AXL 1216 for instance that doesn't play well, but the one you pick up may play great. This is even true with much more expensive guitars just not to the same extent. Buying a guitar isn't like buying a car. You can't just look at Consumer Reports and say, ah yes the Toyota Camry gets 5 stars. You may play one $1000 Fender Strat that just plays okay and then the one hanging next to it plays great. You already play guitar, so go play some guitars and the right one will pick you.

A: Personally, I would look elsewhere.

There is no reason to buy a car like that at a dealer.

You can find a toyota tercel (or any other foreign gas saver) for sale BY OWNER either for much less money, or in far better condition(mileage), or both.

Dealers have to make money, so what may be a 600 dollar car, as this tercel is< the dealer has to sell it for atleast 1000 to make a worthy profit.

*Your best bet is to search craigslist in your area for other tercels or similar cars( corolla, sentra, altima, camry, etc), and you will find one in better shape with less miles for possible a lower price.

A: Don't get the Range Rover. The gas and insurance bills will make your tuition look cheap. Don't choose the ES either, because unless you love the Toyota Camry, which is what lies beneath the badge, you won't like the ES. The Merc is a solid car, but unless you really like Mercs, the BMW 3-series does everything better. Also, why not consider a Golf GTI, from 2006 or newer? They are cheaper, faster, funner, and better looking than anything you have listed. Also, as a college student myself, don't get a car freshman year. Your friends will pester you to drive them, there is no need for a car, and parking is a total bitch.

A: The last year of production, 2003, was arguably the best. The RX300 only ran for 4 years before the 330 took over. The 03 had all the bugs out. Good reliable vehicle regardless of year. Smooth, comfortable and quite, but still plenty of power. A solid quality automobile. As a matter of fact, with the release of the 330 model Toyota cheapened some of the interior quality. Bottom line, good choice.

A: There aren't very many cars with 4WS. Mazda MX-6, Mitsubishi 3000GT, and Toyota Celica come to mind. I think it would make things more difficult or impossible for drifting because the rear end would want to turn in away from the drifting direction.

The amount the rear wheels turn is very small compared to the front wheel. Maybe only an inch or two. Most of the systems have an adjustable gain that limits or disables the steering of the rear wheels at high speeds. They are safe to drive, though. Some people say they "turn faster" because of 4WS, which is true to some extent. But yes, it is another system to go wrong on these older cars.

A: This car is much more electronic than the older Subarus, as it uses Toyota Direct Fuel Injection, and a type of Variable Valvetrain Technology, which means lots of wires. Initial pictures of the car look like it may be a promising tuner, as the large engine bay appears to have lots of extra space, what with the small engine and no turbocharger. This seems promising, although the turbo may have to go in front and above of the engine, because the engine is shifted so far back backwards and downwards to give a better center of gravity. This could lead to a tricky intercooler mount, but I am sure it can and will be done.

A: I've got an '01 - they are nice cars. The fact that some people like to hate on 'em makes them even better IMO. Here's a few things I've done to mine: custom rear spoiler (I've got one from a Toyota Celica GT), KYB rear shocks (red - sets the wheels off nicely), rims/tires, exhaust, tinted glass. I've been considering putting an aftermarket hood scoop on it, but it looks pretty sporty right now. I get looks and everyone wants to race it! LOL

The engines are pretty peppy too. Run synthetic oil and use K&N oil and air filters and you will notice improvement in the performance. A nice exhaust/muffler will give you a nice sound and help with performance.

There's a Cavalier car club on Facebook and I've included a link to another site below. You can get a lot of good ideas on both sites. It may be "just a Cavalier" but they are not without their fans, including yours truly!

A: Like the others said stay away from that car. A good choice would be a Honda civic or Toyota corolla these cars are extremely reliable and are real good on gas. My first car was a Toyota Paseo and that thing got 30mpg, ran like a champ, never broke down and it had 250000 miles on it. I currently own a 2005 Honda accord and I love it. Get a Honda/Toyota... you won't regret it.

A: Hello Teardrop; The only thing I can relate your question to is: After I retired from aerospace work, I bought a brand new 2000 Toyota Tacoma p/u to do messenger work/courier work. I drove that p/u for close to 5 yrs., 6 days a week for 10 to 12 hours a day. It had 849,000+ miles and still running when I put it out to pasture, so to speak. Every 4K to 5K miles, I changed the oil. Every 25K to 30K, I had the rear transmission oiled changed. Yes, there were tire, battery and wiper replacements. The only major problem I ever had was the Alternator. It had a quiet peaceful death. I personally changed that. Later, I bought another Toyota p/u product. A yard gardner asked me if I wanted to sell the old p/u. I asked him how much he had in his wallet. He pulled out $150.00. I gave him the pinkslip. That Teardrop, is my story. Record breaker or not. :))

water pumps are a consumable item. don't wanna do that much labor again soon. i strongly suggest you pay the extra bucks and get a toyota AISIN pump. it will last longer than any after market one hands down.
do check for a front main crank seal leak as well. it's part of the oil pump.
personally, if it were me, i'd do all three. belt, pump (from toy will be pricey, but worth it), and reseal kit for the front main (is 10-15 bucks and not much more labor).

Q: Alright, let me start off by saying that I have not watched any of the Fast and Furious movies... If I get the Honda Civic EX or LX it'll be used and probably an 01-07. With that said I will probably get a spoiler to put on the back to make it somewhat "cool". I DO NOT race or care about that, I just want a semi nice looking car for under 10,000 grand. If I get a car I have 10k to spend and I will be paying all my insurance and gas, so this will not be "mommy's or daddy's" car. I would like a car that gets at least 30mpg and looks semi nice. I'm currently at SUNY Cortland and will reside here for the next 4 years, and I work at a baseball stadium that's 15 minutes from my house, which will be mostly 90% highway to get to, as well as back and forth from Cortland to Long Island. So, with all this said, currently the Honda Civic EX or LX interests me because of the mpg, look, and I can get a used 01-07 with less than 70k miles on it. So please tell me what car/cars you think will be good for at least the next 7-8 years of my life that has less than 80k miles, gets at least 30mpg and looks semi decent. Thank you!!!

A: I would absolutely say get the Civic. Honda makes amazing, reliable, perfect for college student cars. I have an 2000 Accord LX coupe (which I would also recommend) and it is super sporty-looking without any mods. A Civic would get you great gas mileage, and as long as you follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual you'll be good to go! A Toyota Camry would also fit the bill, but they don't look as nice in my opinion...

Q: Right now I drive a 97 mercury sable and I am sick of it. Don't get me wrong it is an excellent, durable car, however it does not fit my personality and it gets TERRIBLE gas mileage. A: The obvious solution would be: get a 4-cylinder 4x4. Remember though that what you save choosing a 4-cyl will be gone through a 4x4 transmission. An alternative might be a light SUV or Xover with permanent 4x4, aka AWD - Japanese and European makes manufacture several models, but engines and transmissions may vary depending on markets.
Some that come to my mind are Subaru, Suzuki, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota, VW,,, The Japanese makes have been achieving unparallelled reliability ratings for decades.
Up to the 2.2L (134 cu.in) displacement they all have 4-cyl engines, from around 2.5L (153 cu.in) up, they offer also 6-cyl ones.
Cylinder count is only indirectly responsible for fuel consumption - it's the engine displacement that matters (and, most of all, how it's maintained and driven). It is true that multiple-cyl engines cost more to manufacture (therefore, to buy) and to maintain.

A: His response is somewhat true. Camaros and Chargers are lower volume sellers, they are not what the masses tend to buy. That is way you see a lot of F150, Silverado, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Carmy commercials. Major automakers are focusing on the major buyers. There is no reason to spend any large amount of cash on advertizing for a model such as the Camaro when it only sells ten thousand units a year compared to a vehicle such as the Silverado that can sell ten thousand a month. Advertizing cost effectiveness, that's it. Advertising is going for the mass sell, dude, weather it be trucks, cars, beer, or hamburgers. That is what makes the corporate world go round.

Run BOTH cleaners THROUGH your PCV valve with engine at FAST idle. WATCH the junk from SLUDGY rings blow out your tailpipe!!! You have NOW cleaned your piston rings!!!! Your IAC is the HEART of your fuel/air MIXTURE. WHen the IAC is CLEANED UP TO SHOWROOM< it will respond to signals generated by your O2 senosrs in a DOMINO effect situation. CLean O2 sensors make the engine run cleaner, and help keep the IAC vale working RIGHT!! STOP using cheap oils that are WAX based and loaded with ASH content like VALVOLINE! Use MOBIL ONE0W-30 and change it ONCE a year. Remove the factory junk Delco units, which NEVER fire fuel completely, and install a set of BOSCH iridiuim or FUSION plugs. These will CHEMICALLY fire the plugs as well as just SPARKING fuel. You will FEEL the differenc IMMEDIATELY. GOOD LUCK! And E-mail me back WITH your RESULTS!!! I have seen SATURN engines with nearly 300,000 miles on them, but they were PROPERLY treated and used ONLY synthetic engine oil. SATURN engines DIE if they over heat just ONE! Your Camry does not have a dipstick for the transmission. The transmission fluid used is called WS (World Standard) and is considered by Toyota to be a lifetime fluid under normal conditions.

The drain and fill procedure technically requires a sophisticated dealer tool and special pump under certain temperature parameters.

Some people find that if you pull the drain plug and measure exactly what came out (by using some sort of measuring jug) and putting back in the exact amount removed you will have no problems.

The WS fluid is very expensive. The other option is to just take it to your dealer and insist then do a 4 quart drain and fill.

A: They are very reliable.

In 2009, J.D. Power and Associates said they are number 4 in most reliable car brand.

1 was Honda, 2 was Subaru, and 3 was Toyota. In 2009.

I have a 1996 Mazda Protege. I had it for 6 years. I bought it with 120,000 miles. It has been off road, in a police chase, used as a delivery vehicle driving 100+ miles per day in the city. It has been used to drive at least thirty 4 hour trips. It was originally sold as a rental vehicle. It was hit by a hit and run driver and been in accidents. It has been used to carry 1000lbs of luggage, people, and furniture to the point where the tires were hitting the body.

Now it has 160,000 miles and it is still running like new. It has given me No problems. It refuses to die. I red line it all the time and rev high- stick shift.

I also know people with 92 and 94 Mazda Protege's. Both lasted 285-290,000 miles before they sold them to buy larger cars for their growing families. I know two people with 2000-2001 mazda 626. One sold his at 250,000 miles. One still drives his at 150,000 miles.

My cousin has a 2010 Mazda 3 now with 40,000 miles on it. He loves it and has had no problems yet.

****Only 2 Mazda's are bad. The "Rotary" engine Mazda's. The RX-8 and RX-7 sports cars. The RX-8 made from 2004-2010 is what gave Mazda a bad reputation. All other Mazda's are extremely reliable and last very long.

And I have a friend with an 07 Mazdaspeed 3. Still driving it with no problems yet.

And I also know someone who bought the 1989 Mazda Miata brand new back in 89. She still drives it today daily in rain, snow, sun, and she never had a problem with it. She loves it and says the only thing she has done is regular maintenance. Still using all original mechanical parts. -I almost bought it from her, but she decided she wanted to keep it.

One thing people do not like about Mazda's is that they are not as quiet or comfortable as other cars. This is because Mazda's are driver focused cars. They are sportier. They handle like sports cars. They feel like sports cars. They are more fun to drive. In today's society, most mom's and older men want something quiet, luxurious, and comfortable like a Camry or Accord, not rough and sporty like a Mazda 6. Mazda's have stiffer suspensions so that they can handle better, but that also causes the stiffer ride.

A: I drive a 1989 Honda CRX DX I get on average 35mpg, and I have 255xxx miles one my engine and it still runs just fine, but taking care of your car will have a huge impact on mpg and longevity both. (Imports, to be particular Honda's and Toyota's are known for lasting longer and getting better gas mileage, there are exceptions)

All are compact 7 seaters which can easily become 5 seaters. If she can wait the new Prius 7 Seat Hybrid is on its way - it promises to have an even higher MPG and looks very stylish. But it will probably be quite costly.

Grand C-Max is a great option if she's changing from a focus, but the Kia has a 7 year guarantee, the Toyota has 5 years.
