A: I would go for the Celica chiefly because it is newer, and is better looking in my opinion. What is more, the Eclipse thing has been slightly overdone, and it is the ricer of choice for everybody. I'd say you go with the Toyota.

A: Don't get the Range Rover. The gas and insurance bills will make your tuition look cheap. Don't choose the ES either, because unless you love the Toyota Camry, which is what lies beneath the badge, you won't like the ES. The Merc is a solid car, but unless you really like Mercs, the BMW 3-series does everything better. Also, why not consider a Golf GTI, from 2006 or newer? They are cheaper, faster, funner, and better looking than anything you have listed. Also, as a college student myself, don't get a car freshman year. Your friends will pester you to drive them, there is no need for a car, and parking is a total bitch.

Stick to that, within a pound or two if you what your Toyota to control and handle as it was designed. No reason to go max on psi, it will only wear your tires more quickly and give your automobile a very harsh ride.

@Anthony, that's the exact commercial I was referring too! The one with Clint Eastwood sort of pep talking America about the car industry in Detriot--it literally put a tear in my eye. One of my friends texted me and thought she just saw the weirdest commercial ever (i'll leave out explicatives). A: My favorites: the H&M ad featuring David Beckham - can I get an Amen?! Seriously though, never found Beckham attractive (still don't actually), but what a rockin' body. I did my darnedest to ignore his face and found it quite enjoyable. ^_^ Second - the chunky dog ad, I can't remember if it was honda or toyota or what, I just remember it was a car ad. I thought it was adorable though. <> Least favorites: the teleflora ad featuring Adrianna Lima. I actually really love Lima, she's someone who'd be a totally awesome gal pal. As for why they fear appreciation of currency is because this decrease their competitiveness of goods compare to USA domestic goods. Take Toyota for example. And due to weak domestic consumption in Japan, their main economic driver are export industry. Thus appreciation of yen would definitely affect their economic growth.

A: The last year of production, 2003, was arguably the best. The RX300 only ran for 4 years before the 330 took over. The 03 had all the bugs out. Good reliable vehicle regardless of year. Smooth, comfortable and quite, but still plenty of power. A solid quality automobile. As a matter of fact, with the release of the 330 model Toyota cheapened some of the interior quality. Bottom line, good choice.

How is drifting with all wheel STEERING?

A: There aren't very many cars with 4WS. Mazda MX-6, Mitsubishi 3000GT, and Toyota Celica come to mind. I think it would make things more difficult or impossible for drifting because the rear end would want to turn in away from the drifting direction.

The amount the rear wheels turn is very small compared to the front wheel. Maybe only an inch or two. Most of the systems have an adjustable gain that limits or disables the steering of the rear wheels at high speeds. They are safe to drive, though. Some people say they "turn faster" because of 4WS, which is true to some extent. But yes, it is another system to go wrong on these older cars.

The Euro currency allowing companies in many nations to ignore excahgne rates due to one common currency. Imagine if the US states did not all use the US Dollar. You drive from NYC to LA. You stop in PA for gas and have to figure out how many $PA = $NY and then in Illinois how many $NY are worth a Chicago buck and so on for each ans every state. What a pain to manage. So Euro gets by this.

Look at how many car brands owned by GM/Ford ate overseas in origin:
Land Rover, Prosche; SAAB (now defunct)...

Look up some company annual reports to stock holders and see the impact of foreign income/profits from subsidiaries they own.

A: It's sounds as if your local Toyota dealer didn't change the engine oil. Fast oil change gyp-joints prey on unsuspecting customers to take advantage of. You forgot to list the good reasons for engine flushing? Don't strain too much because there are none!

The factory recommended 5W-30 will keep the engine clean providing its changed every 5,000 miles. If the motor is dirty under the valve cover, full synthetic Mobil1 had stronger detergents which will clean the engine. Walmart is the least expensive place in town to buy Mobil1.

Q: I am looking to buy a used toyota tacoma, v6, must be 2005+. I want an access cab, trd off road 4x4 rated to tow 6,500 lbs in preferably black, silver, or charcoal. No need to be harsh. Tacomas last a long time and have great fuel economy. I can't afford my dream truck (chevy 2500hd duramax diesel) or my dream horse trailer. They aren't crap! I'm not advertising, I'm simply asking for help if anyone knows of any good dealerships that have a large inventory of tacomas in the areas specified, or if they know of anyone selling brenderups. The trailers are not being sold in the U.S. anymore so they are harder to find. I am allowed to ask for help, I'm only 18 years old and I want to have a means to compete with my horse. You can buy a very nice 90's chevy truck in the 5-10,000$ Range. Chevy's last long, are durable, and will get you to where you need to go even with 300,000 miles...Sorry my Dad is coming out in me! Subaru BRZ Concept..?

A: This car is much more electronic than the older Subarus, as it uses Toyota Direct Fuel Injection, and a type of Variable Valvetrain Technology, which means lots of wires. Initial pictures of the car look like it may be a promising tuner, as the large engine bay appears to have lots of extra space, what with the small engine and no turbocharger. This seems promising, although the turbo may have to go in front and above of the engine, because the engine is shifted so far back backwards and downwards to give a better center of gravity. This could lead to a tricky intercooler mount, but I am sure it can and will be done.

A: I've got an '01 - they are nice cars. The fact that some people like to hate on 'em makes them even better IMO. Here's a few things I've done to mine: custom rear spoiler (I've got one from a Toyota Celica GT), KYB rear shocks (red - sets the wheels off nicely), rims/tires, exhaust, tinted glass. I've been considering putting an aftermarket hood scoop on it, but it looks pretty sporty right now. I get looks and everyone wants to race it! LOL

The engines are pretty peppy too. Run synthetic oil and use K&N oil and air filters and you will notice improvement in the performance. A nice exhaust/muffler will give you a nice sound and help with performance.

There's a Cavalier car club on Facebook and I've included a link to another site below. You can get a lot of good ideas on both sites. It may be "just a Cavalier" but they are not without their fans, including yours truly!

A: Like the others said stay away from that car. A good choice would be a Honda civic or Toyota corolla these cars are extremely reliable and are real good on gas. My first car was a Toyota Paseo and that thing got 30mpg, ran like a champ, never broke down and it had 250000 miles on it. I currently own a 2005 Honda accord and I love it. Get a Honda/Toyota... you won't regret it.

A: Hello Teardrop; The only thing I can relate your question to is: After I retired from aerospace work, I bought a brand new 2000 Toyota Tacoma p/u to do messenger work/courier work. I drove that p/u for close to 5 yrs., 6 days a week for 10 to 12 hours a day. It had 849,000+ miles and still running when I put it out to pasture, so to speak. Every 4K to 5K miles, I changed the oil. Every 25K to 30K, I had the rear transmission oiled changed. Yes, there were tire, battery and wiper replacements. The only major problem I ever had was the Alternator. It had a quiet peaceful death. I personally changed that. Later, I bought another Toyota p/u product. A yard gardner asked me if I wanted to sell the old p/u. I asked him how much he had in his wallet. He pulled out $150.00. I gave him the pinkslip. That Teardrop, is my story. Record breaker or not. :))

water pumps are a consumable item. don't wanna do that much labor again soon. i strongly suggest you pay the extra bucks and get a toyota AISIN pump. it will last longer than any after market one hands down.
do check for a front main crank seal leak as well. it's part of the oil pump.
personally, if it were me, i'd do all three. belt, pump (from toy will be pricey, but worth it), and reseal kit for the front main (is 10-15 bucks and not much more labor).

Honda Civic or other car for college and work?

Q: Alright, let me start off by saying that I have not watched any of the Fast and Furious movies... If I get the Honda Civic EX or LX it'll be used and probably an 01-07. With that said I will probably get a spoiler to put on the back to make it somewhat "cool". I DO NOT race or care about that, I just want a semi nice looking car for under 10,000 grand. If I get a car I have 10k to spend and I will be paying all my insurance and gas, so this will not be "mommy's or daddy's" car. I would like a car that gets at least 30mpg and looks semi nice. I'm currently at SUNY Cortland and will reside here for the next 4 years, and I work at a baseball stadium that's 15 minutes from my house, which will be mostly 90% highway to get to, as well as back and forth from Cortland to Long Island. So, with all this said, currently the Honda Civic EX or LX interests me because of the mpg, look, and I can get a used 01-07 with less than 70k miles on it. So please tell me what car/cars you think will be good for at least the next 7-8 years of my life that has less than 80k miles, gets at least 30mpg and looks semi decent. Thank you!!!

A: I would absolutely say get the Civic. Honda makes amazing, reliable, perfect for college student cars. I have an 2000 Accord LX coupe (which I would also recommend) and it is super sporty-looking without any mods. A Civic would get you great gas mileage, and as long as you follow the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual you'll be good to go! A Toyota Camry would also fit the bill, but they don't look as nice in my opinion...

Q: Right now I drive a 97 mercury sable and I am sick of it. Don't get me wrong it is an excellent, durable car, however it does not fit my personality and it gets TERRIBLE gas mileage. So I have decided it is time for a new car. I am looking to buy a new used car but I don't know what would fit my needs best. The max I would be willing to spend is $8,000. I am wanting a car that is newer than 2002, preferably a 2005 model. A: The obvious solution would be: get a 4-cylinder 4x4. Remember though that what you save choosing a 4-cyl will be gone through a 4x4 transmission. An alternative might be a light SUV or Xover with permanent 4x4, aka AWD - Japanese and European makes manufacture several models, but engines and transmissions may vary depending on markets.
Some that come to my mind are Subaru, Suzuki, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota, VW,,, The Japanese makes have been achieving unparallelled reliability ratings for decades.
Up to the 2.2L (134 cu.in) displacement they all have 4-cyl engines, from around 2.5L (153 cu.in) up, they offer also 6-cyl ones.
Cylinder count is only indirectly responsible for fuel consumption - it's the engine displacement that matters (and, most of all, how it's maintained and driven). It is true that multiple-cyl engines cost more to manufacture (therefore, to buy) and to maintain.

A: His response is somewhat true. Camaros and Chargers are lower volume sellers, they are not what the masses tend to buy. That is way you see a lot of F150, Silverado, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Carmy commercials. Major automakers are focusing on the major buyers. There is no reason to spend any large amount of cash on advertizing for a model such as the Camaro when it only sells ten thousand units a year compared to a vehicle such as the Silverado that can sell ten thousand a month. Advertizing cost effectiveness, that's it. Advertising is going for the mass sell, dude, weather it be trucks, cars, beer, or hamburgers. That is what makes the corporate world go round.

Your IAC is the HEART of your fuel/air MIXTURE. WHen the IAC is CLEANED UP TO SHOWROOM< it will respond to signals generated by your O2 senosrs in a DOMINO effect situation. CLean O2 sensors make the engine run cleaner, and help keep the IAC vale working RIGHT!! STOP using cheap oils that are WAX based and loaded with ASH content like VALVOLINE! Use MOBIL ONE0W-30 and change it ONCE a year. Remove the factory junk Delco units, which NEVER fire fuel completely, and install a set of BOSCH iridiuim or FUSION plugs. These will CHEMICALLY fire the plugs as well as just SPARKING fuel. You will FEEL the differenc IMMEDIATELY. GOOD LUCK! And E-mail me back WITH your RESULTS!!! I have seen SATURN engines with nearly 300,000 miles on them, but they were PROPERLY treated and used ONLY synthetic engine oil. SATURN engines DIE if they over heat just ONE! Your Camry does not have a dipstick for the transmission. The transmission fluid used is called WS (World Standard) and is considered by Toyota to be a lifetime fluid under normal conditions.

The drain and fill procedure technically requires a sophisticated dealer tool and special pump under certain temperature parameters.

Some people find that if you pull the drain plug and measure exactly what came out (by using some sort of measuring jug) and putting back in the exact amount removed you will have no problems.

The WS fluid is very expensive. The other option is to just take it to your dealer and insist then do a 4 quart drain and fill.

A: They are very reliable.

In 2009, J.D. Power and Associates said they are number 4 in most reliable car brand.

1 was Honda, 2 was Subaru, and 3 was Toyota. In 2009.

I have a 1996 Mazda Protege. I had it for 6 years. I bought it with 120,000 miles. It has been off road, in a police chase, used as a delivery vehicle driving 100+ miles per day in the city. It has been used to drive at least thirty 4 hour trips. It was originally sold as a rental vehicle. It was hit by a hit and run driver and been in accidents. It has been used to carry 1000lbs of luggage, people, and furniture to the point where the tires were hitting the body.

Now it has 160,000 miles and it is still running like new. It has given me No problems. It refuses to die. I red line it all the time and rev high- stick shift.

I also know people with 92 and 94 Mazda Protege's. Both lasted 285-290,000 miles before they sold them to buy larger cars for their growing families. I know two people with 2000-2001 mazda 626. One sold his at 250,000 miles. One still drives his at 150,000 miles.

My cousin has a 2010 Mazda 3 now with 40,000 miles on it. He loves it and has had no problems yet.

****Only 2 Mazda's are bad. The "Rotary" engine Mazda's. The RX-8 and RX-7 sports cars. The RX-8 made from 2004-2010 is what gave Mazda a bad reputation. All other Mazda's are extremely reliable and last very long.

And I have a friend with an 07 Mazdaspeed 3. Still driving it with no problems yet.

And I also know someone who bought the 1989 Mazda Miata brand new back in 89. She still drives it today daily in rain, snow, sun, and she never had a problem with it. She loves it and says the only thing she has done is regular maintenance. Still using all original mechanical parts. -I almost bought it from her, but she decided she wanted to keep it.

Don't even think about the diesel. I had one of those VWs. Engine blew at 80,000 miles. Even with the engine being replaced under warranty and the first three years covered bumper to bumper it still cost 22 cents per mile for dealer maintenance alone. Not to mention you couldn't start the car in the garage without smelling up the house and every fill being a smelly mess. Also the price of diesel is typically 20% more than the price of the regular gas the Prius uses. This means you have to reduce the MPG on the diesel to get the equivalent mpg cost that the Prius gives.

My 2004 Prius has cost 12 cents per mile for dealer maintenance, tires, and fuel combined over the 130,000 trouble-free miles I've driven it so far according to the log book I keep.

As far as replacing the battery goes, in the 2004 and later models so few have been replaced it's really a non-issue. Should you have to replace the battery out of warranty there are several choices:

1. Get a new battery. The battery cost is under $2000 + $500 for installation.

2. Get a reconditioned battery. Typically when a battery fails (and really the only experience about failed batteries is with the 2001-2004 Prius that use the older style batteries--even those typically go for 200,000 miles or more) it's only one to three cells. By taking batteries from wrecks and matching the cells the battery can be reconditioned. Places such as http://www.reinvolt.com/ do this.

3. Get a battery from a recent model wreck for about $500.

The problem with the Volt is that it uses premium fuel and when the gas engine runs the mpg is very low. I suspect that most who get a Volt would be better off with a Leaf (or a Tesla S) because there isn't the expensive gas engine to maintain.

In all 3 tests the rankings vary a lot. For ex, C&D ranks the Focus #1, but Cars.com put it 5th. What does that mean? Just that all the cars are very good, and the best one depends on your priorities. C&D is enthusiast biased, and they always favor cars that are fun to drive (and the Focus and 3 are the best two to drive). Cars.com puts less importance on driving dynamics.

The reliability and fuel economy are all pretty similar among cars in this class, so you can't really pick one over the other based on that. If you want a car that's fun to drive, you're best options are the Focus and 3. If you want a softer, quieter car that has a comfortable ride the Elantra and Cruze are the best.

The are only 2 cars I'd avoid. The first is the Toyota Corolla. They haven't had a completely new model since 2003, and it shows. It's by far the most dated car in its class. The engine is lacking the power and economy of it's newer rivals (the best Corolla gets 34mpg highway, and it's more powerful rivals all get about 40mpg). Part of the blame for that falls on the transmission - a 4 speed automatic. A 4 speed was perfectly acceptable 15 years ago, but today most cars in that class have 6 speeds, but at least 5. The Corolla is sorely in need of an update, so for now I'd avoid it.

The VW Jetta is the other one I'd avoid. The previous generation was great. It had a soft touch dash, grat materials quality, and it drove better than anything else in its class. But it was priced in the same range as midsize sedans, so it never sold very well. To gain sales, they had to make it cheaper. For the new generation they removed the advanced multi-link suspension and replaced it with a simpler setup, the soft touch dash and the high quality interior materials were gone in favor of cheap, hard plastics. Basically, they removed all the reasons why past Jettas have been great. While they were cheapening the Jetta, Ford, Chevy, and Hyundai (which I consider to be the class of the field today) were adding better quality materials, and better engines and suspension. And they did it without steep price hikes.

The 3 is definitely a good car, but before buying it I'd at least test drive the Focus, Elantra, and Cruze. That way you know what else is out there. They're all good cars and the best one for you comes down to preference. If you prefer one of the others, then you'll be glad you did, and if you still buy the 3, you'll know you made an educated decision.

2012 Nissan Versa vs. Corolla, Elantra, Mazda3?

I am looking into buying a reliable car under $12K with very good MPG.
I narrowed it down to those cars:
2010 Toyota Corolla
2010 Hyundai Elantra
2010 Mazda 3

Now I found out that I could get a 2012 Nissan Versa for that money. The rating for the 2012 Versa on www.consumerguideauto.com is actually better than the 2010 Corolla and basically as good as the rating for the 2010 Hyundai and the 2010 Mazda3. The MPG for the Versa is actually better than the MPG for all of the other three cars.
I am wondering if I should consider the Nissan. I am just a little confused why I can get a 2012 for just as much as I would pay for the other three cars that are older and have miles on them already.

Is there something I should be concerned about when buying the Versa?
Would you recommend the Nissan or should I go with something else?

A: Drive them.

When you step into the Mazda 3, you will see it is at a completely different level than the others. The Mazda 3 has the most power, the most expensive looking interior, the most standard features, the best handling and steering feel, and is the most fun to drive.

The Versa has the cheapest interior and the lowest power, but the best gas mileage and the most head room. It also has the worst handling and the loudest wind noise at highway speed.

I believe the Elantra still has a warranty for another 3 years, while the Mazda and Toyota warranty will expire next year. The Versa should also have a 3 year warranty when bought New.

The Corolla is the quietest and smoothest riding car. But it is slower and more plain and boring than the Elantra and the Mazda 3.

I would definitely go with the Mazda 3 if I was choosing.

All of these are reliable choices. I would say the Toyota and Mazda are slightly more reliable then the Versa and Elantra.

A: The notice states the recalled mounts are sold as REPLACEMENT equipment. Have you ever had the front strut mounts replaced? If not, you should be fine.
For original equipment, I would suggest contacting Toyota and having them check the VIN #. For replacement parts, if there is not a part number visible, you will have to have someone LOOK at the parts.

A: The top speed is 145mph electronically limited I believe. Being a turbocharged car it can easily be tuned to produce even more power and remove the speed limiter.

I owned a 1.8T GLS however it was my second car, my first car was a much slower Toyota Echo. That being said I think it all comes down to the kid because they can get in just as much trouble in a slow car as they can in a faster car if they are so inclined. I don't think the power on the 1.8T is anything crazy so if he is a responsible kid then I don't think it would be a problem. Having some extra power I think can actually help you get out of hairy situations quickly. I really didn't have any major issues with mine however I do know people who had nightmares with their Jettas. I think it's hit or miss with them as is usually the case with German cars.

A: One, what do you need in a car, it's no good to buy a huge truck when all you're going to do is go around town with minimal cargo on board. Two, insurance cost, presumably if it's your first car, you're not exactly at the age the insurance industry loves and as a result, insurance cost can be a killer on some vehicles. Always do some online quotes at least to get an idea which vehicles you can afford the insurance costs on. Three, gas and maintenance, check the EPA ratings and read reviews to see what kind of gas mileage you can expect and what kinds of common maintenance issues may arise in cars you like.

Other than that it's up to you because there is no end all solution for a first car, especially in the used market. Two identical year cars from the same manufacturer will not be the same after 5 years of use, let alone 10 as each owner treats them differently, drives them differently and looks after them differently. That said, it's never a bad idea to look at Toyota, Honda or even Hyundai, each has had plenty of vehicles over the years that are economical and cheap to maintain. However, if all you're getting per year is $760.00 for gas, then you need something as reliable, fuel-efficient, and as cheap as possible. If you need to haul stuff, the most ideal car would be a station wagon or hatchback, or a small compact pickup truck with a topper on the bed.

The 2012 Wranglers are far superior to any Wranglers on the road as to handling, ride, fuel economy, and accommodations. ALL 4x4s are terrible on fuel economy! With the arrival of the 2012 Wrangler, all of that logic has changed. 17mpg city/ 21mpg hwy. Equal to a 2011 Toyota 4Runner 4WD 17/22mpg or a 2010 Toyota Sienna 4WD. A: It is not hard. Most sports and sport coupes are standards and most economy and in-expensive mid-sized cars have an option to get a standard. Most major car companies have at least a couple of models which are manuals. Examples: Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla are both "standard" vehicles with options for manual transmissions. Manual transmissions are also a few thousand less than their automatic options. You also typically get slightly better mileage. That said, standard transmissions are not great in winter conditions.

I traded my scion tc for it and I had still owed on the scion but they gave me 7500 for the tc and I owed only 8000 in it and I put 500 down. So it evened out. But somehow I got cheated with the kia forte, because the total price I payed for it was around 25000 I believe and I pay 380 a month. It could be from taxes and interest and because I didn't put much down. But I wanna trade it in for a new scion tc, or a scion xd. I know I'll be upside down and I'll still owe alot from the kia, but do you think its possible? And to keep my payment under 430? The kia is still in excellent shape and only has 6000 miles on it. Will a dealer trade it in?

A: They gave you $7500 for the Scion TC, and then they rolled that $7500 into the price of the KIA. That is why a $16,000 car cost you $25000. Things did not "even out." You are still paying for the old car. I am almost positive. This concept is called "negative equity." It happens nearly every time you trade in a car you owe money on.

The Toyota dealer will take your car as part exchange, sure, but then you'll be probably $12-14k in the hole, and you won't be able to finance a new car. Pay $430 a month on the Kia and knock out the loan as soon as possible. By then the new Scion FRZ will be out and your credit history will be good enough to get a good interest rate on one.

A: It could potentially last a long time.

The 3VZ-E 3.0L V-6 is not one of Toyota's better engines, but there are plenty of people who are happy with them and have them last a long time. They have had some issues with head gasket integrity. There was a factory recall to replace the original cylinder head gaskets. You might check to find out if it has been done on your truck--see if you have information from the previous owner, or you can check with your Toyota service department. Also make sure the timing belt has been replaced--it should have a new timing belt about every 90,000 miles.

The automatic transmissions in them are pretty reliable. Make sure the fluid stays clean and try to keep the transmission from overheating due to too much load for long durations, such as trailer towing on long climbs at high throttle.

Stay up with the maintenance and don't abuse it. It could go 300,000+ miles without needing much.

A: My friend has a 86, I believe, 300zx non turbo with intake and exhaust is all. Car is fun to drive, Nissan built, rwd, all good in my book. Only downside we've experience is clutch and fork ware fast and the hydraulic clutch pedal sometimes doesn't like to lift back up lol. His is rust free since it's been stored every winter, but old Nissan's like that including mine usually have mad frame rust so if you go that route check that out. He pays less then me for insurance about $100ish/month age 20 in MN....but that doesn't really help unless you in my area....

Never driven one but always have admired the sc300. Love the way it looks, 2jz powered, toyota built, supra chassis, rwd, solid. On paper, i love everything about this car but never had any experience with maintenance or problems, but then again I never see one broke down. Insurance will be potentially more on this one.

Personally, I'd choose the sc300, z30 i hope. I am slightly influenced on that though, a guy in my area drifts a sc400 and god it looks good. A little more power then the 300 but still almost the same damn thing.

A: Range Rovers are very nice vehicles but are well known for having mechanical issues and high maintenance cost, but the sport would be sufficient for 3 kids (seats 5). The Tahoe gets around the same mpg, slightly better, and has seating for 8 and will offer more luggage room. A Toyota Highlander would be similar to the Tahoe but has won for best driver choice. You might want to look into a Volvo XC90 (no 4x4/AWD), Mercedes GL450, Infiniti QX56, or Audi Q7 as these have seating for 7 occupants.

You can re-create the Marty McFly truck with any Toyota Xtra-cab 4wd truck from 1984-1988: they had the same body style. For the most accuracy though, use a 1984 or 1985 truck so that it has the solid front axle.

-In my experience, I have heard great things about Honda Civics. They will go forever with the right care and maintenance.
-If you're looking for a car that does better on a dirt road, i would always go with an SUV over a car. All of my family member's cars get 'shook to pieces' on dirt roads.

If you were to ask me to steer you in the right direction, I would take into consideration that you obviously don't like American-made cars (which would be my first suggestion - mostly because it is the patriotic, even if it was a Toyota Tundra that was manufactured in Texas) and tell you to look into a Honda Pilot. I haven't heard many good things about Nissan, but a lot of good things about Honda.

A: ALL starters cost about the SAME for any car. So do alternators, and other parts that wear with time. BRAKE PADS are ALSO about the same. Usually the SIZE and WEIGHT of the car are more costly. TOYOTA cars are the longest lasting and easiest to rely on than most. They ALWAYS have had GREAT ratings in consumer reports and other rating agencies. The only problem with EUROPEAN cars is usually the OWNERS lack of experience with them. They tend to be pricier BECAUSE they were designed to run all day on the Autobahn at speeds of 140+ MPH and NOT even get hot! This takes SPEC AIL engineering to accomplish. PREVENTATIVE maintenance is ALSO a major key, and the use of CHEAP REGULAR WA based engine oils will RUIN any car quicker than you can imagine. Most cars will last for 300,00+ miles with PROPER fluid use and proper fluid CHANGES.The best engines hae timing CHAINS rather than belts, and are NOT interference fit engines. Most TOYOTA engines will nOT get valve damage should the timing belt brake before it gets changed. HONDA engines will self destruct a little bit IF the timing belt brakes before replacing! SOMe CHEVY engines are ecotec and have cast iron slevves in an aluminum engine BLOCK. THis can WARP easier if the engin over heats. I like the TOYOTA engines best. GOOD LUCK!!

A: If you are still in High-School, I DEEPLY SUGGEST getting into an Auto Shop class so that when your car needs an oil change or tires rotated, or has a problem that you can at least work on it or attempt to fix it.

Things you should buy after leaving the dealership/owners house- You can buy almost everything at Autozone or O'Reilys, or other auto parts stores.
A "Chilton" manual for your "new" car.(so you know how to do the small repairs/maintenance after your auto shop
About 6 of those tree air-fresheners... (new car smell is the best) [place them discretely around your car, in the glove-box, under the seats, center console, maybe hang one on the rear view mirror and your car will instantly start to smell better.]
Ice scraper (depending on where you live)
Jumper Cables (everyone should have them just in case something goes wrong)
First Aid Kit (In case of an accident)
a Full tank of Chevron PREMIUM gasoline every 3 weeks(Chevron has more additives than store brand gasoline and will make your engine run better and longer)
etc...

For a car, I would say to get either a Pontiac Vibe, a Toyota Corolla, a Dodge Stratus, etc...
www.autotrader.com can really help when deciding on a first car, as it has multiple options like engine size, transmission, mileage, number of people it can hold, etc, etc.

Ask someone (a friend) that knows a fair amount about cars about the best car for you and ask around with your friends to see what kind of first car they had, if they liked it, and if they regret having got it, and take all those answers into consideration for your first car...
